Piling and RC Ground Beams for a Pottery Workshop in North Yorkshire
Westbuild Piling recently completed the piled foundation and reinforced concrete ground beam works for a new pottery workshop and classroom at Tawny Wood Studio in Ingleby Greenhow, North Yorkshire.
The project was carried out for Gem Group Ltd, a York-based construction company and previous Westbuild client.
The new building required a specialist foundation solution because poor ground conditions extended to approximately eight metres below ground level. The foundation design was also more complex because the structure was constructed across two different levels.
Why Was Piling Required?
Poor ground conditions can make conventional shallow foundations unsuitable, particularly where weaker soils extend several metres below ground level.
On this project, piling was required because unsuitable ground conditions extended to approximately eight metres.
The building was also positioned across two different levels, creating a more complicated foundation arrangement than would normally be required for a single-level structure.
A piled foundation provided the support required for the new workshop and classroom while allowing the foundation system to accommodate the stepped levels of the building.

The Piled Foundation Solution
Westbuild installed 24 piles, each 220mm in diameter, as part of the foundation system.
The piles formed the primary structural support for the building and were combined with reinforced concrete beams to create the completed foundation.
Where poor ground extends to significant depth, piled foundations can transfer structural loads through unsuitable near-surface soils to more appropriate bearing ground below.
For this North Yorkshire project, the piling solution had to accommodate both the challenging ground conditions and the change in level across the new building.
Reinforced Concrete Ground Beams
Following installation of the piles, Westbuild constructed the reinforced concrete ground beams required to form the foundation.
RC ground beams span between piles and distribute the structural loads from the building into the piled foundation system below.
The stepped design of this particular project meant the reinforced concrete foundation had to be carefully constructed between the two different building levels.
This created a more technically demanding foundation arrangement than a conventional level site.
Constructing a Complex Two-Level Foundation
One of the key challenges of the project was constructing the piled foundation across the two different levels of the new workshop and classroom.
The combination of deep poor ground and a stepped building design required careful sequencing of the piling and reinforced concrete works.
Despite the complexity of the project, Westbuild completed the piling and reinforced concrete foundation between 29 July and 14 August 2026.
Following completion, the client commented that they were very impressed with the way Westbuild had constructed the complicated project and managed the steps between the two levels.
