Steel Cased Piling for New Build Homes in Birkenshaw, West Yorkshire
Westbuild Piling recently completed the design and construction of piled foundations for a new-build housing project in Birkenshaw, West Yorkshire.
The works were carried out for Riva Homes and required a specialist foundation solution because of the presence of a nearby tree, with piling needed to satisfy the requirements of NHBC.
Westbuild designed and installed 10no 150mm diameter steel cased piles, with pile lengths of up to six metres, together with approximately 20 linear metres of reinforced concrete ground beams.
Why Was Piling Required?
Foundation design for new-build homes needs to take account of both the ground conditions and features surrounding the proposed development.

The Steel Cased Piling Solution
Westbuild designed and constructed 10 steel cased piles, each 150mm in diameter, with pile lengths of up to approximately six metres, measured from the underside of the reinforced concrete ground beam.
Steel cased piling provides an effective foundation solution where loads from a new structure need to be transferred to suitable bearing ground below.
For this residential development, the piles created the structural support required for the reinforced concrete foundation system above.
Reinforced Concrete Ground Beams

RC ground beams span between the piles and transfer the loads from the building into the piled foundation system.
Combining steel cased piles with reinforced concrete ground beams created a complete foundation solution for the new-build project.
Designed and Constructed by Westbuild Piling
Westbuild was responsible for both the design and construction of the piled foundation, while the reinforced concrete ground beams were constructed in accordance with the engineer's drawings.
This allowed the piling solution to be coordinated with the structural foundation design and the requirements of the development.

Project Completion
Works commenced on 30 September and were completed on 5 October.
