Residential Piling and RC Ground Beams for a New Build House in Leeds
Westbuild Piling recently completed the piling and reinforced concrete foundation works for a new-build residential property in Leeds.
The project was carried out for Vinehouse Construction Ltd, a returning client who contacted Westbuild after previously working with the team on other projects.
The new house required a specialist piled foundation solution because poor soil conditions extended to approximately four metres below ground level. Working from the pile layout designed by the project structural engineer, Westbuild installed the steel-cased piles and associated reinforced concrete ground beams required to support the new property.
Why Was Piling Required?
Ground conditions are a critical consideration when designing foundations for a new-build home.
On this Leeds project, the near-surface soil was not considered suitable to provide adequate support for conventional shallow foundations. The structural engineer therefore designed a piled foundation system capable of transferring the loads from the new house through the weaker ground onto more suitable load-bearing strata below.
Using residential piling in this type of situation can provide a reliable foundation solution where poor or variable ground conditions make traditional foundations unsuitable.
The Steel-Cased Piling Solution
Westbuild installed 24 steel-cased piles, each approximately 220mm in diameter, as part of the new foundation system.
Steel-cased piling is commonly used where ground conditions require a robust piled foundation capable of transferring structural loads to stronger ground at depth.
The piles were installed in accordance with the layout provided by the structural engineer and formed the load-bearing support for the reinforced concrete foundation system above.
For this project, piling was required because poor soil conditions extended to approximately four metres below ground level.
Reinforced Concrete Ground Beams
Once the piles had been installed, Westbuild constructed the reinforced concrete ground beams detailed by the structural engineer.
RC ground beams span between the piles and transfer the loads from the building into the piled foundation system below.
Combining steel-cased piles with reinforced concrete ground beams provided a complete foundation solution for the new-build house, allowing the structure to be supported independently of the weaker ground closer to the surface.
Working With the Structural Engineer and Building Control
The pile layout and reinforced concrete ground beam arrangement were detailed by the project structural engineer.
Throughout the works, both the structural engineer and Building Control inspected the installation at the appropriate stages. The works were approved before the foundation was completed.
This collaborative approach is particularly important on residential piling projects, where the piling contractor, structural engineer and Building Control all have an important role in ensuring the completed foundation meets the required design and structural standards.
Project Timescale
Piling work commenced on 2 June 2026, with the completed foundation concreted on 22 July 2026.
The works included the installation of the 24 steel-cased piles together with the reinforced concrete ground beams required to form the new foundation.
Following completion, Vinehouse Construction confirmed that they were very pleased with Westbuild's work and looked forward to working with the company again on future projects.
Residential Piling for New-Build Homes
Poor ground conditions do not necessarily prevent a site from being developed for a new home, but they can mean that a specialist foundation solution is required.
Westbuild Piling provides residential piling solutions for new-build homes, self-build projects, house extensions and other residential developments throughout the UK.
Our piling and foundation services include steel-cased piling, open bore piling, sectional flight auger piling and reinforced concrete ground beams, allowing the foundation system to be matched to the structural design, site access and ground conditions.
If a structural engineer or ground investigation has identified that your new-build property requires piled foundations, contact Westbuild Piling to discuss the project.
