Steel Cased Piling and RC Ground Beams for a Hotel Extension in Saltburn
Westbuild Piling recently completed the design and construction of a piled foundation for an extension at Brockley Hall Hotel in Saltburn.
The project was carried out for Marton Windows Limited, who approached Westbuild for an engineered foundation solution after poor ground conditions had been identified during the soil investigation.
The completed foundation incorporated 29no 150mm diameter steel cased piles together with reinforced concrete ground beams, providing the structural support required for the new hotel extension.
Why Was Piling Required?
Ground investigation is an important part of foundation design because it establishes whether the soils beneath a proposed development can safely support the new structure.
For the Brockley Hall Hotel extension, the soil investigation identified poor ground conditions that made a conventional shallow foundation unsuitable.
A piled foundation was therefore required to transfer the loads from the new extension through the weaker ground and into more suitable load-bearing strata below.

The Steel Cased Piling Solution
Westbuild designed and constructed a foundation incorporating 29 steel cased piles, each 150mm in diameter.
Steel cased piling provides a robust foundation solution where structural loads need to be transferred through unsuitable near-surface ground.
For this hotel extension, the steel cased piles formed the primary support for the new foundation, allowing the development to proceed despite the poor ground identified during the investigation.
Reinforced Concrete Ground Beams
The piles were connected using reinforced concrete ground beams, creating a complete piled foundation system for the extension.
RC ground beams span between the piles and transfer the loads from the building into the piled foundation below.
Combining steel cased piles with reinforced concrete ground beams enabled Westbuild to provide an integrated foundation solution designed around the ground conditions and structural requirements of the hotel development.
An Engineered Foundation Solution
Westbuild was contacted by the client on 30 April 2026 with a request to provide both an engineered solution and a cost for the piled foundation.
This meant Westbuild was involved not simply in installing the piles, but in developing the foundation solution required for the project.

Completed Within One Week
Work commenced on 8 September 2026 and was completed on 15 September 2026.
